Today in… 1986

A follow-up on yesterday’s post. From my 8th Grade English Class Journal, November 18, 1986:

I just got out of gym. I hate volleyball with a passion. After school today. We’re going to my Aunt L’s house for spaghetti with my grandparents. What fun. I’m going to miss Dance Party. Oh well. The Lip Sync wasn’t by Jason and Bob, it was by Pisces. It was stupid. F is absolutely going to kill me. I almost died. Last night Amy came over after we went downtown. I got Superteen’s October issue, and the record “Walk Like An Egyptian” By the Bangles. It was the last one. Amy got “Human” by the Human League, and something else. Gotta go, Bye.

Ah… a little bit more info! My copy of “Walk…” was the last one in stock. This goes along nicely with yesterday’s post indicating that when I purchased it, the song was climbing its way to number 1! Nice! And now we have the added info that Amy bought “Human” by Human League. Let’s see… according to Wiki ”Human” was the band’s first single off their album Crash (which was released in September of 1986) and became Human League’s second number one single in America. And Amy helped!

Hmmph… Dance Party! I had to go and mention it, didn’t I? Yes, 8th grade saw me obsessed with this Philly-based dance show on the USA Network. And this means I subjected Amy to it, and as I recall, Amy HATED Dance Party. My friend “F” and I *loved* it , though! While my friend “F” frothed over the show’s most popular regular, Bob – I spent my evenings staring at his best friend, Jason. I think Lip Syncs were about one of the worst things to come out of the 80s. I think we only cared so much about them because whomever did a lip sync had more “face time” for us to stare at them on tv. Nothing to kill me or die over. I wish I had a quarter for everytime the phrase, “I almost died” shows up in my journals and diaries. I’d be wealthy! Everything is so dramatic when you’re 13!

Incidently, I don’t remember how the spaghetti was, but it makes me wonder… I was absent the next day!

My Top 5 Signature Strengths

At least for today!

Thanks to viasurvey.org for their enlightening survey (be prepared – it’s 240 questions long!)

Your Top Strength

Judgment, critical thinking, and open-mindedness
Thinking things through and examining them from all sides are important aspects of who you are. You do not jump to conclusions, and you rely only on solid evidence to make your decisions. You are able to change your mind.

Your Second Strength

Caution, prudence, and discretion
You are a careful person, and your choices are consistently prudent ones. You do not say or do things that you might later regret.

Your Third Strength

Capacity to love and be loved
You value close relations with others, in particular those in which sharing and caring are reciprocated. The people to whom you feel most close are the same people who feel most close to you.

Your Fourth Strength

Honesty, authenticity, and genuineness
You are an honest person, not only by speaking the truth but by living your life in a genuine and authentic way. You are down to earth and without pretense; you are a “real” person.

Your Fifth Strength

Appreciation of beauty and excellence
You notice and appreciate beauty, excellence, and/or skilled performance in all domains of life, from nature to art to mathematics to science to everyday experience.

October 14, 2008? WTF is going on?

Alright, I’ve had a migraine on and off – mostly on – since later Friday night. it is now Sunday and not showing signs of letting up. Migraines for me are not unusual, but one of this duration is pretty much rare. It’s not been excruciating. This is of the functional variety. Functional but tiring. Just weird. I have been writing it off to the stress at work last week and possible hormonal fluctuations (just started my off week of bc pills). THEN, I got the urge – totally unrelated – to check the Unexplained Mysteries board to see what’s going on over there, as I haven’t looked at it in a while. This is a forum on the paranormal and the unexplained.

For a while now I’ve been telling B that I feel like something big is going to happen. I feel weird. I can’t explain it except to say I don’t feel ”myself” and I feel very “off.” As you know, I’ve been to several doctors and have come up empty thusfar. I have had some psychic abilities in the past that I have never been able to harness or control. In short, the biggest example of this is Sept. 11th, 2001. The night of Sept. 10th I was very sick to my stomach for no reason I could figure out. My stomach was way off. I really don’t want to discuss it right now, but the last dream I had the morning of Sept. 11 before I woke up was a very vivid, lucid dream in which I was walking to & arriving at work in what I recognized as lower Manhatten (I dont actually live there) and experienced what I can only describe as an epic disaster. In retrospect, I am sure it was the perspective of some unfortunate soul in the second tower.

So I’ve had some experience with feeling weird and having things happen. Things I have no control over. But big things.

I don’t know what to make of the info I have found today. Info on 10/14/08, motherships, Google Earth anomalies and weird lights on the news during the VP debate the other night. Read all about it here and in a number of different threads here.

I mean, I know it all sounds like a load of hooey. But so would have 9/11 before it really happened! What really gets me is this blog where a known psychic named Blossom Goodchild is channeling info from the “aliens” (I guess) and posting it. If you read the entry for Friday 10/3 you’ll see them discussing how our people are suddenly experiencing headaches. Yeah, this really made me stop and think. Clearly, I’m a sensitive. Clearly, I have a headache. Hmmm. This and the google earth anomalies are also being discussed here.

Maybe I’m wrong, but I don’t think this is a “cult” thing. Even if it is, I am NOT part of any cult and never would be. I just think this is all interesting and definitely weird. I’ve discussed before the increase in paranormal events within the last year and what it all could mean.

So, just WTF is going on in this world? Hmmm. ;)

Like, the 80s are totally back!

So I was at a mall last weekend and decided to stop in Forever 21. This store has a history of having cool clothes that are always sold out in my size. Seriously, I envy tiny chicks – mostly because they always get to have clothes available when they want to shop. I’m not fat – I’m the same size as everyone else. And everyone else beats me to the racks! When when when will stores figure out they need to order more larger sizes and fewer smaller sizes? You’d think they’d get a clue when all the clearance merch is size 0!

Well, while I was grumbling around Forever 21, I made a shocking discovery. The 80s are totally back. I saw this trend coming a few years ago, yes. But it’s shocking that (a) it’s still here (b) it’s more pervasive than ever (c) this is upstate NY (does that mean the trend is dying it’s natural death? oh probably) and (d) the 80s trend covers the best and worst of my 6th & 7th grade years er, I mean 1984-1986.

What got me in the store in the first place is a Duran Duran T-shirt with the cover of the Rio album on it that I think I’ve wanted since 1984. It’s not on the website, and they didn’t have my size (in 2 different Forever 21 stores) so I can’t show it to you. Nor can I show you the T-shirt I did end up buying - a Stones one with a zebra-print tongue logo (not on the site and I don’t feel like taking a picture).

What shocked me the most was (sit down, folks)…

STIRRUP PANTS!

What the…? I mean, I knew leggings were desperately trying to forge a comeback, but stirrup pants? In 7th grade I had a bitchen purple pair. I remember even at that age the stirrups annoyed the living shiz out of us all and we almost never ended up wearing them in our shoes all day. They were so irritating on the feet. This one won’t last.

Speaking of leggings – animal print leggings were in the store. Including this leopard pair!

Need more proof? How about these photos from the Forever 21 site?

You get the idea. Actually, redoing the 80s fashion seems like it could be fun. If only I weren’t about to turn 35! I’d feel totally dorkalicious wearing stirrup pants now! Hell, I was dorkalicious wearing them then!

And the 70s? If you’re looking for 70s yumminess I suggest you look no further than the dress department!

Junk

After feeling better much too soon on Wednesday evening, I am home again today with a massive headache. It developed overnight and I woke up at 5:15 a.m. after having the most chill-inducing, scream-worthy nightmare I’ve had in years. It was so horrifying I don’t even want to discuss it in detail. It was almost like a sleep-paralysis episode, but I have those when trying to fall asleep, not when waking up. I know you can have them when waking up (with hypnopompic hallucinations). I just never do. Perhaps this was one of those times. This nightmare was about my Dad – who died unexpectedly a year-and-a-half ago. Maybe I’m still experiencing some post-traumatic stress? I honestly can’t believe more research hasn’t been done into the relationship between sleep/sleep deprivation, stress, sleep disorders, post-traumatic stress, and hormone levels and their effect on each other. From my own experience and reading other’s blogs the fact that there is a relationship seems pretty crystal clear. The Health industry really sucks.

In better news, last night before I got sick again I posted an entry on The New Kids On The Block reunion over at the Project Absurd blog. Check it out. I’ll try to post something interesting here if I feel better later.
